The film opens as two barefooted men climb over mountainous terrain, each with a bloodied stone clenched in his teeth. This is one of the endless montages that feasts the eyes and stirs the heart in this accounting of immigrant families embarking from Italy and arriving at Ellis Island at the turn of the century. The Odyssey may have been told before in films, but never so fantastically I think.
